Description

Ca' Vendramin Calergi is the great Renaissance palace in Cannaregio overlooking the Grand Canal. Since 1946 it has been home to the Casinò di Venezia, founded in 1638 and considered the oldest gambling house in the world, and it is where Richard Wagner died.

First and foremost, look at the facade, built for the Loredan family between 1481 and 1509 and attributed to Mauro Codussi: three stories of half-columns and large mullioned windows, with a striking play of light and shadow. Below the ground-floor windows runs the motto of the Knights Templar, “Non nobis Domine, non nobis.”

Inside, the T-shaped hall looks out over the canal and holds works by Palma il Giovane. The Wagner Rooms gather handwritten letters, scores and paintings linked to the composer.

Wagner rented the mezzanine in 1882 and died there on February 13, 1883, at the age of 69. In the courtyard a plaque commemorates his death with lines by Gabriele D'Annunzio, who described the palace as “a sculpted cloud resting on the water.”
