Description
The Murano and Burano private boat tour takes you away from the busiest corners of central Venice to two islands of artisans, travelling there and back by private boat. The group is limited to 22 people, and an English-speaking local guide stays with you the whole way, with a headset so the commentary is clear.
First comes Murano. On the short crossing the guide tells how its glassblowers were so valuable that they were forbidden to leave Venice on pain of death. A craftsman then works the glass while the process is explained, from silica sand to the colours. Afterwards you have time to look through a large collection of glass art and walk the island by yourself.
Burano comes next, with brightly painted houses crowded along the canals. You visit a building where women still make lace, and the guide describes the technique of this fading art. You can then pick out a lace keepsake or just stroll the winding streets and try local treats.
Torcello is left out on purpose, which gives more time on Murano and Burano and less on the boat or on foot. The tour takes about five hours, runs in all weather and involves moderate walking. Hotel pickup and tips are not included, and the order of stops can change.
